If you’ve ever found yourself walking into the auditorium, or perhaps the boardroom or conference area and felt your heart beating a little faster, with a discernible thump-thump, thump-thump, and your brain both a little less sharp than it should be and stuck in a minor time warp; if you’ve ever felt moistness in your palms or around the collar and your face a bit flushed, then congratulations! Either you have a horrible disease or you have the #1 fear on the planet!
Public Speaking!
Some say it is more feared than death. If you have this fear you share it with millions and millions of people. Many people suffering from fear of public speaking believe that they are alone in feeling so frightened. The truth is that most people just don’t want to talk about their fear of being in front of a group.
Called by many names – stage fright, speech anxiety, shyness, fear of speaking, performance anxiety, and speech phobia fear of public speaking can have a negative effect on careers and the ability to get things done. I have spoken with many people who’s fears related to incidents in high school or college speech classes.
You see, when a person has a negative experience, the brain can link the negative feelings associated with that experience to other similar experiences. A person could have a momentary feeling of panic during a speech and the brain thinks “Aha, here’s a dangerous situation. I know because I feel panic. How do I keep myself from getting in this dangerous situation again? I know, I’ll attach the feeling of panic to it – that’ll stop me.” This is one of the primary ways that humans learn – by attaching emotions to situations. The trick is to break the linkage in the mind between the context of public speaking and the fear.
So, if you would like to conquer this horrible fear of public speaking, then please sign up today!
Also, please feel free to put your ideals on public speaking below and let’s really see how many people are scared to death of it!
Also, that famous “Give me liberty or give me death!” line, was in a speech by Patrick Henry in a court meeting on March 23, 1775. Just saying… :)
P.S. I was completely terrified when I first started, but after years of practice and patience, now I don’t even throw up before every lecture! :D
Also, congratulations to TheWhite Prince who originally guessed November 19, 2009. I’ll redeem myself at the 70,000 posts game! :D
60,000 posts have been made! Maria Elsa Sayre just wrote it on November 21, 2009 @ 7:59 PM EST! Congrats! :)
This would be very beneficial, but you can never know what will happen when children are on the internet. I don’t mean anything by it, but I just believe people over 10 can be on the computer. Even until 13 they should be supervised. I guess I’m just overprotective especially with my kids. :P
