I think it would be cool, and beneficial to (1) some of us native tongue tutors living/teaching abroad, (2) those who speak multiple languages and (3) to the students, for this awesome site to have a subcategory under “languages taught” that says the tutor’s field of expertise in regards to which students the teacher has a preference or experience tutoring. For example, my experience—at least as of today—has been teaching Italian native tongue speakers. Since I am learning Italian, I feel that students whose native tongue is Italian gain more benefit being tutored by me than a student whose native tongue is another language I don’t know.

I know that a simple reading of a tutor’s bio should be indication enough for students, but it might be nice for this information to be obvious at quick glance (especially since there are 400+ English teachers! Oh mio!!!!) :)

Just a thought…

Buona giornata, tutti!

Good idea. Definitely feel free to propose it on the ideas board so others can vote it in.

I just put an idea on the idea board that we post basic instructions to instruct students of other languages to get into our classrooms.

I have had trouble several times now getting Students of low English proficiency into the room. I even commented that we could as tutors help to translate the instructions into multiple languages or even better all languages.

What do you all think?

Love that idea, because, I have had the same problem with students understanding what to do.

Great post Janelle! you dont have to learn Italian or chinese to do your teaching perfectly. NO! there is something called environmental teaching. What is that?
All you need is to learn a little bit about the culture and costoms of people you are tutoring. Besides, try hard to use examples related to their environment.

1. River Nile is the longest river.

an example of comparison of adjectives taught to people living in Egypt.

2. Indian women always wear saree.

OK ! Janelle. YOU ARE GREAT.
